Why Murals?

Murals create an awareness and appreciation for the visual arts while building a sense of pride and connection within and throughout the community. Public art in general and murals in particular can create and define a neighborhood, enhance the urban environment and feed the cultural soul of the city. Moreover, murals allow us to showcase the tremendous creative talent we have in Fresno.

I participated in creating a mural in Dinuba,Ca. This was the first mural I worked on in my adult life. I brought my two kids and husband who are also artists. It was a very rewarding experience. I got my husband to do some of it because he is so talented and tall! My kids did chalk art on the sidewalk in front of it. The people would slow down in cars to look, passerbys would stop and talk. I here Laton has finished up a great project in their town. I belong to the Heritage Trail Committee in Clovis that helps to place historical public art along the trail from Shaw to Sierra along Clovis Rd. Public art is needed in a huge way by all communities. It helps to inspire and create a common bond. We all need to express our humaness, our ability to respond to our changing environment in ways that reach out and speak to the masses. A picture is worth an infinitive amount of words. Don't speak unless spoken to...art never shuts up! This is the main reason I am with Creative Fresno!

I'm not sure what murals are in the works, but I know that Donavan (the mural project chair) is working on some cool stuff. When he has a chance, I'm sure he'll give us all an update.

Gerry- looking foward to those pics. I'm actually not in clovis. My profile says fresno. But I have handed out some flyers in the Old Town Clovis area... maybe you saw one of those. No response from those flyers by the way (really, they didnt have any sample pictures or website link or anything so I guess thats to be expected. Not to mention, I found out that Old Town Clovis has its own little governing body of some sort that doesnt support new ideas... no changes, no art, no signs... nothing. At least thats my interpretation of what they said."

I'v just added some photos of some murals I've done in the past. I've only done brush work so far. I'd love to learn to use spray cans sometime.
